Using Microsoft Project to indicate Task Slippage in a Gannt Chart

Gannt Diagram Lesson Objective:

Educate a way to display slippage of one task on the next part of the Gannt Diagram starting from the existing date without updating the task's start date:

Starting with a project plan having previously been baselined :
A task is planned to begin on 10/22 and then end on 10/24. Today, 10/27, the assignments remains unstarted.

The completed Gannt needs to display:

• Baseline begin 10/22 - forecasted conclusion 10/24
• Adjusted begin 10/27 - conclusion 10/29.

Instructions:

The first step is to perform schedule maintenance in Microsoft Project so that:

1. No unstarted work remains left of the Date used for Status
2. No unfinished effort remains with a completion date sooner than the Date used for Status.
3. No Actual Begin Date is later than Date used for Status.
4. No Actual End Date is later than Date used for Status.

Without having Project using per cent Complete when executing schedule maintenance, Microsoft Project won't know the best way it can adjust the timeline.

Here are some ways to output the intended Gannt view:

• View/Tracking Gannt:
  Project displays a view with the timeline lines for both forecasted and baselined one after the other.
  
• Select Format/Gannt Chart Wizard:
  Click Baseline and run from there.
  
• Tools/Tracking/Update Project:
  Click the menu selection to reschedule incomplete work so that it starts after mm/dd/yyyy
  Luckily, Microsoft Project provides the status date as part of the process.
